<p><em>There is no doubt that social media presence impacts organic search results. This can specifically be seen in social media signals. Social media signals, such as tweets, comments, likes, and +’s, tell search engines that the content being shared is valuable. The key to generating social signals is to create good content and engage actively. Web site traffic and rankings are increased when users are directed to the site through the use of multiple links from various social media signals. Another simple way to improve social signals is to make it easy to share content. This can be accomplished by adding social sharing buttons directly on a web site.</em></p>
<h4><em>Personalized Search</em></h4>
<p><em>Personalized search is another example of how social media is affecting SEO. Search results vary from each user depending on location and the social media platform being used. Google’s launch of Search, plus Your World, personalizes search results with friend recommendations, photos, and posts. Bing is another search engine that has incorporated personalized searches. When signed into a Facebook account, the user will see relevant results that their friends have “liked.”</em></p>

<p><em>&#8220;Australian businesses that don&#8217;t have a mobile-friendly online presence may as well let their competitors walk into their stores and poach their customers, according to a Google study.</em></p>
<p><em>New research by Ipsos Media, commissioned by Google, has found Australian consumers are leading the world in their use of smartphones as in-store shopping tools to check reviews and compare prices, often changing their minds as a result.</em></p>
<p><em>According to the study, most shoppers have researched a product or service on their smartphone and about 30 per cent have bought something via their phone.</em></p>

<p><em>The research found 52 per cent of Australians have a smartphone, a 40 per cent increase on last year, and most won&#8217;t leave home without it. The research also showed a growing number of people are using their phones as research tools, with 65 per cent accessing the web from their phone on a daily basis.</em></p>
<p><em>Jason Pellegrino, head of mobile ads for Google Australia, said despite the growth in people using smartphones in-store, most Australian businesses (79 per cent) didn&#8217;t have a mobile-friendly presence online, leaving them vulnerable to losing business.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8221;Retailers spend a lot of money on marketing to drive people into their stores, so to have them go online and change their minds once they&#8217;re in there means the walls of your stores are open … your sales staff aren&#8217;t the only ones talking to the customer, maybe it&#8217;s your competitors,&#8221; he said.</em></p>
<p><em>Mr Pellegrino said mobile internet provided a great opportunity to connect with and service customers but too many retailers were waiting to develop their presence online and in the mean time losing business. &#8221;The mobile revolution isn&#8217;t coming, it has already happened. Mobile is no longer optional, businesses need to develop a mobile strategy now, or risk getting left behind.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><em>The Ipsos report also found 61 per cent of mobile users were unlikely to return to a site they had trouble accessing from their phone.</em></p>
<p><em>Mr Pellegrino said there were simple things businesses could do to develop a mobile presence, including catering to the smaller screen size and providing more straightforward information for mobile than they presented elsewhere online, such as on websites.</em></p>
<p><em>The Ipsos study also found a growing number of smartphone owners were using their phones while they engaged with other media, creating opportunities for advertisers to boost the effectiveness of their campaigns. Most people used their phone while watching TV (48 per cent), while others were reading newspapers or magazines (18 per cent). A growing number of people (57 per cent) had searched on their mobile device after seeing an ad on TV.&#8221;</em></p>
